Psychiatrists call on ‘abnormal’ Trump to be impeached for his ‘poor mental health’

Three psychiatrists have written an editorial for USA Today calling on Congress to impeach President Donald Trump — and their call to remove the president has nothing to do with special counsel Robert Mueller’s findings.

The psychiatrists — John Gartner, a former assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University Medical School; Dr. David Reiss, who has been practicing psychiatry for 30 years; and Dr. Steven Buser, a former Air Force psychiatrist — argue that the president’s “poor mental health” is a danger to the United States and should be used as a grounds to remove him from office.

“Many of us in the mental health community have been arguing for years that Trump should be removed because he is psychologically unfit,” they write. “We posted a professional petition online stating that ‘in our professional judgment… Donald Trump manifests a serious mental illness that renders him psychologically incapable of competently discharging the duties of president of the United States.'”

They go on to document how House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and even some members of his own administration have pondered removing Trump via the 25th amendment in which he’d be declared mentally unfit to perform his duties.

However, they think the most likely remedy at this point is for the House to start up impeachment hearings.

“Pelosi has thus far resisted calls for impeachment on the grounds that it would arouse the ire of Trump’s base going into the 2020 election,” they argue. “But she seems to ignore the opposite risk: Underreacting desensitizes us to the dangerous severity of Trump’s dysfunction, normalizing the abnormal.”

Journalist Michael Wolff’s second book on the Donald Trump administration will be released on Tuesday. Like his first book, Fire and Fury, his follow-up reports shocking details on the administration.

With Wolff’s new book, Siege: Trump under Fire set to be released on Tuesday, the author joined Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC Monday evening.

“Everybody is calling everybody else a name,” Wolff said. “And I assume that that sort of begins with Trump. It’s the ultimate defense, you have to be calling someone names because he’s calling everyone names.”

“They’re all calling Donald Trump crazy, they’re all calling him out of control, stupid, all those kinds of things,” O’Donnell noted.

“Anybody who has had contact with Donald Trump comes away thinking that there’s something wrong with him,” Wolff said. “And that’s putting it in a nice way.”

“This is — this is to say the very least, a difficult man to work with,” Wolff said. “To go a little further than this, this is a crazy person.”

“And that’s a continuation of what was in your first volume of this, of this study of Trumpism,” O’Donnell noted. “And you presented at the beginning more than anything else a continuing psychological profile of Donald Trump, of who this man is and how his mind works. Which in your view I take to be the most important thing about what you can find in your studies of this is how does the president’s mind work.”

“I think that that’s crucial. I think ultimately, 100 years from now, 50 years from now, ten years from now, we’re not going to be talking about the president’s policies,” Wolff replied. “We’re going to be talking about who this man is, how did this possibly happen. How could a person like this find himself in the position that he’s found himself in?”

“I mean, one of the interesting things is I think the dominant narrative now is that Donald Trump is the strong man,” he noted. “Whereas I think actually the narrative is Donald Trump is melting down. Every day, it gets stranger and stranger. Every day he’s more alone. Every day someone else deserts him. Every day he does something that is more peculiar, less logical — and has to be undone by someone else.”

George Conway questions Trump’s mental fitness after Bette Midler feud: ‘Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs’

President Donald Trump interrupted his state visit to the United Kingdom — at 1:30 a.m. — to tweet about actress Bette Midler.

Trump called Midler a *“washed up psycho” only hours after she had addressed him directly.

“Donald, if you’re reading this you should not slam your dick in a door!” Midler suggested.

Olivia Nuzzi, Washington correspondent for New York Magazine, noted the timing of Trump’s tirade may not have been the most worrying thing about the outburst.

“I love everyone pointing out that it’s 1:30 in the morning in London as though it would be normal for the president to fight with Bette Midler at, say, 4 in the afternoon,” Nuzzi wrote.

Prominent Republican attorney George Conway, who is married to White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway, offered his thoughts.

“Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs in any time zone,” Conway said, adding the hashtag #DerangedDonald.

Trump Goes Into Denial About USS John McCain: ‘I’m Not Even Sure it Happened’

President Donald Trump grew defensive when asked about his feud with John McCain in an interview Wednesday, and cast doubt on reports that the White House sought to hide a battleship bearing the late senator’s name out of fears it would upset him.

In an interview on Good Morning Britain, Trump was asked by host Piers Morgan about his feud with McCain. “It seems a little beneath you, if you don’t mind me saying, that now he’s dead, you’re carrying on attacking him. Is it not time to let it go?” Morgan asked.

“No I don’t attack him,” Trump said. “People ask me, like you’re asking me. I didn’t bring his name up you did. You brought his name up, John McCain. So, I’m not attacking him at all. I don’t think about him.”

“I was not a fan, I didn’t like what he did to health care, I didn’t like how he handled the veterans, because I got them choice, he was always unable.”

“But he’s dead, Mr. President,” Morgan pleaded. “There has to come a time…”

“Excuse me but Piers, you’re asking me a question. If you don’t ask me about John McCain I would never talk about him,” Trump shot back, referring to a man he has continued to attack, unprompted, at his rallies.

Morgan brought up reports, which were confirmed by the White House as well as the Navy, that the administration sought to move the USS John S. McCain “out of sight” during Trump’s trip to Japan.

“I knew nothing about that,” Trump said. “I’m not even sure it happened.”

“Somebody clearly said something,” Morgan pushed back.

“First of all, I didn’t know anything about it, but *I’m not even sure it happened,” Trump insisted. “I hear it’s fake news. Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. But again, I don’t talk about John McCain unless someone asks me about it.”

On NBC’s Meet the Press last week, Trump’s acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney confirmed that a staffer sought to have the ship hidden from the president, insisting it was not an “unreasonable” request to make.

This is worth a try I guess! Donald Trump has never been evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional in a controlled environment. I keep remembering that Sigmund Freud evaluated Woodrow Wilson as having a Jesus complex having never even met him . This was based on the fact that his father was a preacher and Wilson viewed him as God and because Wilson was the son therefore he was Jesus ! Yeah I know. So this kind of nonsense implication has been going on for a while.

I was deeply disappointed when Obama was elected but I got over it. This extended tantrum is immature at best. Someone I deeply respect on here wrote to ask why I bother arguing my points of view because most on here are so settled into their positions that nothing will change them. And all they can do is muster personal attacks. Maybe I’m naive but I’m still hoping that Socratic dialogue and respectful argument will win the day but it doesn’t even work in real life. Why should it work in a porn forum where everyone attacks and hides behind anonymity? Maybe I am hopelessly naive but shooter I see your point.

Trump Offers Flurry of Excuses for Dodging Vietnam, Claims ‘I Would Not Have Minded’ Serving

President Donald Trump offered a litany of excuses for having avoided service during the Vietnam War, yet still claimed he “would not have minded serving” in the war that he has frequently compared with his own “brave” battle to avoid a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Those excuses included not being a “fan” of the war, the claim that “at that time, nobody ever heard of the country,” pointing out that the North Vietnamese were not “Nazi Germany,” and that he had not moved to Canada to avoid the draft.

Former CNN personality Piers Morgan interviewed Trump during the current UK trip, and brought up the subject of the anniversary of D-Day.

“What kind of debt do you think we owe the people that fought on the beaches of Normandy?” Morgan asked.

“Well, the ultimate debt,” Trump said, adding “That was, you know I was looking at some of the statistics, that may have been the greatest battle ever in history. You know, you hear so much about, different battles, not to mention any because they are all, you know, important, especially when somebody people died in so many of them, but there are those that say that that was the greatest battle of them all, and that was something really incredible, and being there is going to be, being at that site will be very interesting.”

“You were, um, not able to serve in Vietnam because of a bone spur condition in your feet,” Morgan said, referencing the medical excuse Trump secured during the war. “Do you wish you had been able to serve, would you have like to have served your country?”

“Well I was never a fan of that war,” Trump said. “I’ll be honest with you, I thought it was a terrible war, I thought it was very far away, nobody ever, you know, you’re talking about Vietnam, and at that time, nobody ever heard of the country, today they are doing very well, in fact, on trade, they are brutal. They are very brutal.”

“They are great negotiators, they are great business people, but nobody heard of Vietnam, and they’re saying what are we doing, so many people dying, what is happening over there?” Trump continued. “So I was never a fan. This isn’t like I’m fighting against Nazi Germany, I’m fighting, we’re fighting against Hitler. And I was like a lot of people, now I wasn’t out in the streets marching, I wasn’t saying, you know, I’m going to move to Canada, which a lot of people did. But no, I was not a fan of that war, that war was not something we should have been involved in.”

“Would you like to have served generally, perhaps in another…” Morgan asked.

“I would not have minded that at all, I would have been honored, but I think I make for it right now,” Trump said. “Look, $700 billion I gave last year, and this year $716 billion. And I think I’m making up for rapidly, because we’re rebuilding our military at a level that it’s never seen before.”

‘Dementia’: Trump buried in mockery for baffling tweet claiming the moon ‘is a part’ of Mars

President Donald Trump on Friday sent out a scientifically illiterate tweet in which he scolded NASA for any plans it might have for going to the moon — and then bizarrely claimed that the moon was “part” of the planet Mars.

*“For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon – We did that 50 years ago,” the president wrote. “They should be focused on the much bigger things we are doing, including Mars (of which the Moon is a part), Defense and Science!”

The president’s tweet quickly drew ridicule from across the web, as well as bafflement from followers who had no idea what, if anything, the president was trying to communicate.

It feels strange to me that for once, I actually understood what Trump was attempting to say: large-scale missions to Mars would probably be easiest with manufacturing/mining/refining/staging areas on the moon, in orbit, and at the Lagrange point between the earth and moon.

So, in effect, the moon is part of Mars, if you include the words and concepts elided. Not that he would understand, per se, but he's surely been told by someone that getting to Mars will include going back to the moon.

I’d love to see him try to explain the Lagrange points, though.

George Conway, the husband of White House aide Kellyanne Conway, went of on President Donald Trump in a series of stunning tweets Sunday morning deeming the president “mentally unwell” and calling on him to resign from office.

Conway, a frequent and harsh Trump critic, responded to a tweet in which the president defended his attacks on the media.

“You’re not ‘presidential’ at all, period. You’re mentally unwell,” Conway wrote. “You engage in bizarre, irrational, self-defeating behavior, which prompts criticism of you, which triggers more bizarre, irrational, self-defeating behavior. You would have been fired from any other job by now.”

“Do yourself and the country a favor,” Conway continued in another tweet. “Resign and seek the psychological treatment you so obviously need.”

Conway proceeded to link to “two great books discussing your myriad psychiatric problems.”

“And if anyone has any doubt about the question, ask yourself this: If, say, a CEO of a major publicly-held company engaged in conduct remotely similar to what we’ve seen of Donald J. Trump over the past 2-1/2 years, what would happen?” Conway asked. “How long would she or he last in the job?”

President Donald Trump on Monday delivered a long and rambling response during an interview on CNBC when asked about whether America’s big tech companies need to be broken up.

After a CNBC host asked the president whether he thought major American tech firms were too large and needed to be reduced in size to maintain a competitive market, Trump went off on a long rant about the European Union and the way they treat American companies.

“I’ll tell you this: The European Union, which is a fantastic group of negotiators, they actually, *a very, very prominent person who you know well, who’s on your show a lot, said the person at the European Union that is in charge of taxation hates the United States more than any person anywhere in the world,” Trump began. “But I really believe that’s true! Every week you see them going after Facebook and Apple and all of these companies that are great companies. There’s something going on.”

The president then said that, even though he believed that the EU was suing American tech companies because they “hate” America, it would also be a good idea for the United States to follow their example.

*“When they give European Union $7 billion and $5 billion and $2 billion, you know, Apple gets sued for $10 billion, and you know, right now it’s going on and they’ll end up settling, they get all this money,” he said. **“Well, we should be doing that! They’re our companies, so they’re actually attacking our companies. **But we should be doing what they’re doing! They think there’s a monopoly, but I’m not sure that they think that, they just figure this is easy money, we’ll sue Apple for $7 billion and we’ll either settle or win the case. **So I think it’s a bad situation but obviously there is something going on in terms of monopoly.”

Now this is something happening right before our very eyes and anyone who bothers to look can see it for themselves. And just as a glaring example. The idea of slapping tariffs on Mexico was insane. But it took corporate America, the Republicans in the Senate, and a falling stock market to make him back down. And just about everyone knew Trump was going to try and lie about it and just claim victory. But then he couldn't stop. Until he is standing before the nation claiming its a great victory because there is a secret agreement that will change everything. And that was in the face of Mexico saying no such thing exists.

Yale psychiatrist: Trump’s bizarre self-defeating behavior is evidence of his deteriorating mental state

On Monday, President Donald Trump declared victory in his trade war with Mexico, claiming that his threat to raise tariffs is forcing the country to stop the flow of migrants across the border. He then turned his focus to China.

“The China deal’s going to work out,” Mr. Trump said on CNBC. “You know why? Because of tariffs. Because right now China is getting absolutely decimated by companies that are leaving China, going to other countries, including our own, because they don’t want to pay the tariffs.”

Trump’s trade wars — which have alarmed even his Republican backers — present yet another example of the President’s erratic behavior.

Raw Story spoke with Dr. Bandy X. Lee about the president’s actions and what role mental health professionals might have in our current moment. Lee is a forensic psychiatrist and a renowned expert on violence at Yale School of Medicine, who has been consulting with the World Health Organization since 2002 and teaching at Yale Law School since 2003. She is author of the authoritative textbook, “Violence: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Causes, Consequences, and Cures,” president of the World Mental Health Coalition, and editor of the New York Times bestseller, “The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 37 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President.” She and her coauthors recently prepared a definitive mental health analysis of the Mueller report, which is gathering signatures.

Raw Story: Do you think that the president’s mental state is deteriorating?

Dr. Bandy X. Lee: His state has been steadily deteriorating for some time, and we already started at a worrisome level. We have been trying to argue that “capacity” considerations have to happen at the same time as considerations of “criminality.” One does not exonerate from the other except in exceedingly rare cases, which do not apply to the president. Rather, both occurring at the same time make him more dangerous.

We already know that Mr. Trump has thought about how starting a war can be politically advantageous. “In order to get elected, @BarackObama will start a war with Iran,” he tweeted on November 29, 2011. “Now that Obama’s poll numbers are in tailspin—watch for him to launch a strike in Libya or Iran. He is desperate,” he tweeted on October 9, 2012. “I predict that President Obama will at some point attack Iran in order to save face!” he tweeted on September 16, 2013. What people assume about others often tells us a great deal about how they themselves think and operate.

He also without doubt noticed how George W. Bush, who was considered ineffectual and laughable, suddenly took on authority when a scared nation needed to rally behind a leader. These are the things individuals who lack capacity focus on above actual responsibilities. Real paranoia in a leader is also very effective in rallying a population, and that is why lay pundits continue to see him as “crazy like a fox,” not knowing that being “crazy” doesn’t mean you cannot be “effective as a fox.” Dangerous abnormality is especially important for mental health professionals to point out, for it is “effective” toward destruction.

Raw Story: George Conway tweeted about your book yesterday, saying it was one of “two great books discussing [the president’s] myriad psychiatric problems.” He astonishingly said, “Do yourself and the country a favor. Resign and seek the psychological treatment you so obviously need.” Do you agree?

Dr. Bandy X. Lee: Yes. My respect for George Conway has grown over time, and he is a graduate of Yale Law School! He says what needs to be said: “What’s astonishing is the media’s and the nation’s utter failure to confront the fact that we have a psychologically unwell and unfit president.”

What he is speaking about, the “bizarre, irrational, self-defeating behavior,” which triggers more such behavior with criticism, is the very definition of mental pathology, and his statement, “You would have been fired from any other job by now” summarizes our recent capacity evaluation. It is true that, if Mr. Trump were in any other job and were fired and filed in court, or if the court required testing before he could return to his job, we would have done the exact same testing—including the part about his refusing a personal exam—to discover that he fails every criterion for doing any job that requires rational decision making.

The media’s and the American Psychiatric Association’s roles were crucial: the New York Times explicitly shunned psychiatrists unless they were in the small handful willing to say the president is “just a jerk,” he “does not have narcissistic personality disorder,” or that psychiatrists have nothing to offer the public. CNN has an explicit policy not to publish mental health experts. The APA allowed others to discredit anything a mental health expert would say in the absence of a personal exam, even in preventive psychiatry or public health, where a personal exam does not even apply; the APA’s leadership even admitted it did so not to lose government funding.

Raw Story: Can you talk a bit about the Congressional town hall you are planning?

Dr. Bandy X. Lee: The reason we reconnected with Rep. John Yarmuth’s office is because a year and a half of waiting for Republicans to reach out produced no result. He was the one lawmaker who was once a Republican himself, spoke with Republicans, and came from a largely Republican state (Kentucky) where he has been successful for a long time. We needed a meeting of bipartisan Congress members to present our serious finding of incapacity, which we believe is as important—if not more—than criminality. I hope that Republicans will show concern over the importance of competence, as they should the rule of law.

Our definitive analysis shows that we have been right all along—including our judgment of choosing the side of safety over offending political relations. The APA can no longer claim this is “armchair psychiatry,” since the information in the Mueller report is exactly what we would look for in a capacity evaluation, not merely public documents, and here it is under sworn testimony. I think experts need to be thinking intellectuals who decide for themselves what is ethical in the face of difficult choices, and the public needs to have access to expertise—it should not be a mechanism for exclusion but a service. Knowledge empowers the public, and special knowledge can be important.

Raw Story: You have been exposed to a lot of attacks recently as the conservative media covered you.

Dr. Bandy X. Lee: They have tried to discredit us by framing the Congressional meeting as something “the Dems” are driving or by calling me a “resistance psychiatrist”—Rush Limbaugh even tried to say I am not a psychiatrist!—but it is important that we reach out to the segment of the population that does not wish to be persuaded. In treatment, you keep looking for opportunities to bring a resistant person or group back to reality. Reality can sometimes be difficult, but accepting it and applying justice or treatment accordingly, instead of cover-ups, is what makes real solutions possible.
